Brake pads wear every time you stop. Replacing them on time keeps stopping distances short and protects the brake discs.
Warning signs
- A high-pitched squeal when braking, from the wear indicator.
- Grinding noise: the pad material is gone and metal is touching the disc.
- A longer pedal travel or the car pulling to one side.
- Brake warning light on the dashboard.
Typical intervals
In city traffic, front pads usually last 25,000 to 40,000 km. Highway driving can stretch this further. Check the pad thickness at every service; replace below 3 mm.
When you replace them
Always replace pads in axle sets (both front wheels together). Inspect the discs for scoring or a lip at the edge, and bed in new pads with a few gentle stops.
